*Investigative Report Alleges Rigging in Edo Governorship Election, Intensifying APC-INEC Controversy*
January 30, 2025
A recent investigation by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) has brought forth allegations of significant electoral malpractice in the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election, purportedly favoring the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The FIJ report details instances of voter suppression, violence, and result manipulation. Notably, in Etsako West Local Government Area, the APC reportedly secured 32,107 votes against the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) 17,483 votes. The Certified True Copy (CTC) of the collation results from this area was labeled as a "Replacement Copy" and lacked the official Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stamp, raising concerns about its authenticity.
Further discrepancies were identified in Oredo, where results in 53 polling units were allegedly altered in favor of the APC.
Similar irregularities were reported in other local government areas, including Egor, Akoko Edo, and Ikpoba Okha, suggesting a pattern of vote inflation for the APC and deductions for the PDP.
These revelations have intensified ongoing controversies involving the APC and INEC regarding electoral integrity in Nigeria.
The PDP's governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, described the Edo election as "the worst election in the history of this country," alleging unprecedented collusion between the electoral umpire and the police to rig the election. The PDP has since filed a legal petition challenging the results, citing non-compliance with the Electoral Act and widespread irregularities.
The APC and INEC have consistently denied these allegations.
However, this report adds to a series of disputes between the ruling party and the electoral commission, raising concerns about the credibility of Nigeria's electoral processes and the impartiality of its institutions.
