The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared plans for a nationwide protest on Tuesday, February 4, in response to the federal government's proposed 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs. The decision was reached during a meeting of the NLC's National Administrative Council on January 29.
NLC President Joe Ajaero criticized the tariff hike, stating, "For a worker earning the current minimum wage of N70,000, this means an increase from N7,000 to a staggering N10,500 per month or 15% of his salary, an unsustainable cost." He emphasized that the approval was a clear assault on Nigerians and an abandonment of the people's concerns.
The NLC's planned protest aims to signal to the government that Nigerian workers reject the proposed hike, especially given the prevailing economic hardships. The union has been at odds with the federal government since President Bola Tinubu's administration implemented policies such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, leading to increased costs of basic amenities and food.
The NLC's stance reflects broader concerns about the impact of the tariff increase on Nigerian workers, who already allocate approximately 10% of their daily wages to telecommunications services.
The union's planned protest underscores the growing tension between labor groups and the government over economic policies affecting the populace.
