Timothy Osadolor , the Deputy National Youth Leader of Nigeria's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has dismissed concerns that internal conflicts could lead to the party's collapse before the 2027 elections.
He emphasized the PDP's resilience and organizational strength, stating, "PDP is too organized and blessed to fold up." Osadolor's remarks come amid discussions of a potential coalition among opposition parties aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections.
He acknowledged the merit in forming a united front but cautioned against repeating past mistakes, referencing the 2023 elections where vote splitting among opposition parties contributed to the APC's victory. He noted, "We saw what the labour experiment caused in Nigeria; we are eating agbado and ewa in excess today, thanks to them."
The PDP has recently faced internal challenges, including leadership disputes. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum is expected to remain in his position until the next party convention, despite criticisms regarding his leadership. Some party members have expressed concerns that his continued tenure could lead to further electoral losses.
Former National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan remarked, "The inability of Damagum to manage the PDP’s internal politics effectively is responsible for a series of losses suffered by the party." In the broader political landscape, discussions about forming a new political force to challenge the APC have gained momentum.
Analysts suggest that a merger of opposition parties could replicate the success of the APC's formation in 2013, which united various parties to unseat the then-ruling PDP. However, recent statements from key opposition figures indicate that such alliances may not materialize. Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party have both denied involvement in merger talks, with Kwankwaso stating, "This is a complete lie and has no basis in reality."
Despite these challenges, Osadolor remains optimistic about the PDP's prospects. He urges those considering a coalition to engage with the PDP, stating, "If the persons behind these grand plans are serious, they should be talking to PDP now, discussing strategies and working relationships."
As the 2027 elections approach, the dynamics within Nigeria's political parties and potential alliances will play a crucial role in shaping the electoral landscape.
