China is witnessing a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, overwhelming hospitals and sparking international attention. Reports highlight simultaneous outbreaks of HMPV, influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19, straining medical facilities and fueling public anxiety.
Videos circulating on social media show overcrowded hospitals and crematories, but no official emergency has been declared .The Chinese CDC reports a sharp increase in HMPV cases, particularly in children under 14. The virus, first identified in 2001, is known to cause respiratory illnesses, including severe cases of bronchitis and pneumonia in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms and Transmission : HMPV symptoms mimic other respiratory infections, such as:
