Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the recent Edo State Governorship election , voiced his disappointment over the conduct of the polls. Ighodalo finished second with 247,274 votes, losing to Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 291,667 votes.
Reflecting on the election during an interview, Ighodalo expressed frustration, stating that if the election had been transparent, he would have accepted the result without hesitation. However, he noted that as events unfolded, it became clear that the process was deeply flawed.
"I’m disappointed, to say the least," he said. "What we witnessed was far from a free and fair election. There were clear signs of interference and manipulation. Votes were cast, yet the results we saw didn’t align with the accredited numbers."
Ighodalo pointed to what he described as blatant attempts to alter the outcome, with instances of votes being inflated beyond those actually counted. He also criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not addressing these discrepancies in real-time.
He referenced an incident involving the Edo State Governor, who had confronted INEC officials about a delay in the collation of votes. According to Ighodalo, the Governor's intervention was what finally led to the resumption of the collation process. "Without his involvement, nothing would have moved forward. It’s clear that something was amiss at that office."
Ighodalo painted a grim picture of the APC’s actions, accusing the party of acting as if they controlled the electoral process entirely, with little regard for fairness. He criticized both INEC and the security forces for their complicity, stating that the people of Edo State deserved better.
"The people are hurt. They expected a fair election, a chance to choose their government freely. Now, they feel cheated," he said. "But I know the people of Edo—they won’t stand idly by while their voices are silenced."
Ighodalo concluded by calling on INEC to reconsider its role in the election, urging the commission to correct its course and ensure that the true will of the people is respected. "We can’t let this kind of injustice stand. The people of Edo State deserve a fair process, not this mockery of democracy."
